At some point, perhaps soon, Theo Epstein may begin another summer sell with the Cubs, who after an even 80 games were 10 games under .500. Epstein might deal a handful of players by the end of July, and the most coveted is starting pitcher Matt Garza, who would land the best prospects in return. Gregg and starting pitcher Scott Feldman also are drawing interest, though neither would bring back anywhere near the return of Garza. Teams are scouting the Cubs heavily and will continue to do so until the July 31 trade deadline. The Red Sox have sent their main scout, former Cubs assistant to the general manager Gary Hughes, to follow the team on the West Coast portion of the current nine-game trip. (Chicago Tribune) Comment
Over the past few months, Halifax Mooseheads center Nathan MacKinnon had been shooting up the draft charts, and he eventually arrived at No. 1 on Sunday in Newark, N.J., where Colorado ended the suspense. The Avalanche is going to rue the day it passed on the chance to draft Seth Jones. I couldn't shake that feeling Sunday after attending the team's NHL draft watch gathering at Chopper's Sports Grill.... Jones would have struggled at times with Colorado in 2013-14, as he now will with the Nashville Predators, who claimed him with the fourth choice. But soon, and sooner than the Avalanche, Panthers and Lightning seemed to consider possible, he will be great. This is a gut feeling. It is instinct. The Avalanche should have taken Jones. Credit Los Angeles general manager Mitch Kupchak for making a preemptive strike. [The Lakers] were assured they would get the last word when it came to Dwight Howard's free agency pitch process. Turns out they got the first word as well. [Kupchak] met briefly with Howard face-to-face shortly after 12:01 a.m. ET Monday night when NBA free agency officially opened up, a league source told ESPNLosAngeles.com. Meanwhile, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, who was in L.A. at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel according to the Houston Chronicle, took to Twitter to court Howard at precisely the same time. ... Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash will be a part of the Lakers' pitch to free agent center Dwight Howard on Tuesday, league sources told ESPN on Sunday. (ESPN Los Angeles) Comment
