FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -- Geno Smith says his goal is to be "a franchise quarterback," but acknowledges he has lots of work to do to get there with the New York Jets.

The former West Virginia star slid out of the first round of the NFL draft and was taken by the Jets on Friday night as a second-round pick. While he acknowledges at his introductory news conference at the Jets' practice facility that the wait was agonizing, Smith says that's all behind him and he's looking forward to getting his NFL career started.

A record-setting quarterback in college, Smith says he received his playbook and has spoken to his Jets coaches. He could compete with Mark Sanchez - if he remains on the team - and David Garrard for the starting job.
