Ruff a real inspiration
Posted by Tom Layberger
Should Lindy Ruff be named the winner of the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's coach of the year, the honor still would not serve to represent all that he has endured and accomplished regardless of whether his team gets to hoist the Stanley Cup.
Ruff, who was hired as Buffalo's bench boss in July 1997 and is the league's longest tenured coach, guided the Sabres to team records of 52 wins and 110 points this season, and has his club knotted with Carolina in the Eastern Conference finals. Nobody had a right to expect anything resembling such success. In fact, many prognosticators picked the Sabres to miss the playoffs. Some ranked them down around 12th or 13th in the conference.
But why sweat the smallish details? After all, the Buffalo Sabres were an organization that filed Chapter 11 during a miserable 2003-04. When something like that happens, there's always a chance that a new ownership group will relocate the club, never mind bringing back the coach. Fortunately, ownership issues were resolved for the better, and Ruff had a new contract.
Following the lockout, the 46-year-old embarked on the considerable task of massaging a roster that had some promising young players, but little star power and the lack of a clear-cut No. 1 goalie. But Ruff knew that his team and the new rules could work well together. The players were on board from the get-go and the coach was able to spread the wealth with ice time and keep confidence high despite an injury bug that bit hard all season.
In March, with Ruff and the Sabres humming along toward their first postseason appearance since 2001, the coach was dealt a major obstacle far greater than any ownership uncertainties could provide. A mass was discovered on the brain of his 11-year-old daughter, Madeleine. The tumor was thankfully removed without complication.
As if to underscore how much Ruff means to his players, Buffalo lost six in a row at that time, including a listless 5-0 drubbing at the hands of the Thrashers with Ruff at home with his daughter. The team he molded, guided and encouraged felt his pain, but picked up the pace when the news about Madeleine became brighter and it went on to win seven of its last eight to clinch home ice.
Here it is the end of May and Ruff's team is still alive. No matter what happens from here on out, if there were such an award as NHL Man of the Year, Lindy Ruff, I'm sure, would be at the top of most every ballot.
I grew up in Buffalo and watched the Sabres. Lindy was probably my favorite player when he played and I'm happy the team has stuck with him this long. He is a class guy and is never outcoached.
No one man has given more to the Buffalo Sabres organization than Lindy Ruff besides, maybe, Seymour Knox. Lindy deserves every bit of recognition he is finally getting on the national scene! I will be happy to see him hoist the cup when it happens!
Ruff was a good player, but he is an even better coach. He has created one of the more exciting hockey teams in memory. They may not have many big names aside from Briere, Drury, etc. but they are playing incredible team hockey.
Here's too all the people around the NHL and even Buffalo fans who were mad that the Sabres didn't do much in free agency. Last time I checked individual players do not win Stanley Cups - Solid teams do! Props to Ruff for sticking with his core guys and eliminating Satan since he was bad for team chemistry. I hope they win it all but, if they do not I have thoroughly enjoying watching how Ruff has got this team performing night in and night out. Go Sabres!
Lindy deserves all the credit in the world, he is a great person and coach. He deserves so much recognition for what the Sabres have done this year, cup or no cup, the year has been magical for this team. Thanks to Ruff for being the leader and the heart of the team, and reminding everyone that there is more to life than just hockey. Still, I must add, Go Sabres!!
My favorite memory of Ruff was a game against the Islanders. He came around the net and the Islanders goalie Billie Smith hit him in the face with the butt of his stick. Ruff gets up and beats the hell out of Smith. Priceless. He deserves all the kudos he is getting now.
I became a Lindy Ruff fan when he punched Billy Smith in the mouth after Smith butt ended him in the face. Ruff should be coach of the year and win The Cup or not, he knows how to coach. Credit ownership for sticking with him.
Being from the Buffalo area, you cannot understand the impact this team has had on the region this year. Lindy and the boys have brought a passion to the area that we have not seen in over a decade. This is a blue-collar team of hard-working individuals--just like the region itself. Go Sabres! Thank you Tom and Lindy!
Lindy is a very special individual. I have been a Sabres fan since they entered the league. I thought that the late Punch Imlack was the best at bringing team chemistry to a team, but in my opinion Lindy has proved to be better. He is not afraid to throw down a challenge to a player. When he does he usually gets results. Last year he tried to motivate Satan and failed. That is why Satan is home golfing and the Sabres are in the hunt for the cup.If Ruff can not get the best from a player no one can. When a player is not playing up to there full potential he will be the first one to tell them. On the flip side when a player is playing above there potential he will be the first one to praise them. Don't be surprised if we win the cup this year under the leadership of Mr. Ruff. Go Sabres!
Lindy's a stud. Jan 9, 1989, the final game of the NHL/Soviet series is in Buffalo, and the Sabres need a win for the NHL take the trophy. A tie or loss would result in the Soviets taking it. Lindy scores in OT, Buffalo wins 6-5, the NHL gets the trophy. Great night at the Aud. GO SABRES!!
Lindy Ruff is the best coach and this Buffalo team is so solid. I know there going to win the cup. This team will deserve all the awards and what a great owner to work so hard to keep this team in Buffalo. I love to watch this team Paul from Dallas TX
The Coach of the Year award going to Ruff is a no brainer and certainly long over due. He molded a team along with Darcy Regier that no one expected to even come close to making the playoffs. He overcame injuries to important players and most importantly his daughter's ilnness to guide this team to the best season in Franchise History. He exemplifies what Buffalo is all about through his hard work and determination to do whatever is necessary to win. Go Sabres. I
You are correct, Ruff is a great coach and arguably the best dressed. I don't agree with your comment on Buffalo lacking a goalie, what about Miller? Yes he was out with a thumb injury, but he was still here. A team doesn't need a roster full of star players, because oftentimes it is their ego's that get in the way of great success. For all the "haters" in the sports world that still continue to dog the team, keep on doing it, it's only fueling their fire. LETS GO BUFFALO.
There could not be a more deserving coach than Lindy for coach of the year. He has inspired not only his team and an entire city but he is also inspired all hockey fans in both his personal and professional lives. I am a Sabres fan but even if I was not, lindy will still get my vote without question. The only ending that seems fitting is to have Lindy hoisting the cup! LETS GO BUFFALO!
The fact that the Sabres have been so hard hit by injuries this year in the reg season and, now, the playoffs yet continue to win without missing a beat is testament to Lindy Ruff's talent as a coach and motivator. Buffalo is proud to have him and proud of how well the organization, from Tom Golisano down to the players, has represented us. We are praying that losing 4 key starters is not the breaking point and the storybook season will continue with Buffalo's first major championship since the AFL Bills in 1966.
Lindy Ruff is an A-1 class act! No one deserves this honor more. He has done a great job making a great TEAM out of the Sabres. It's nice watching hockey without a one-man show.
