TOKYO (AP) -- Former Mets and Giants outfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo will return to Japan and play for the Pacific League's Nippon Ham Fighters next season.

Shinjo, who spent most of the 2003 season with the Mets' Class AAA Norfolk club, told reporters Wednesday he has made up his mind to return to Japan.

"I'm going to be playing in Hokkaido next year," Shinjo said. "I look forward to your support."

Nippon Ham, managed by American Trey Hillman, will play its home games next season in the Sapporo Dome on Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido.

The 31-year-old Shinjo was drafted by the Hanshin Tigers of Japan's Central League in 1990. He signed with the Mets as a free agent in 2001, was traded to the San Francisco Giants in 2002, and then returned to the Mets for 2003.

He batted .193 with one homer and seven RBIs in 62 games with the Mets this season.
