Arkansas dismisses LB Gallon after DWI arrestPosted: Thursday November 20, 2003 5:38PM; Updated: Thursday November 20, 2003 5:38PM FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Arkansas coach Houston Nutt dismissed Jimarr Gallon from the team Thursday after university police charged the senior linebacker with driving while intoxicated and driving the wrong way on a one-way street. Gallon is the second Razorback linebacker disciplined this week. Nutt indefinitely suspended Sam Olajubutu on Sunday after Fayetteville city police charged the LaGrange, Ga., sophomore with drunken driving the night of his 20th birthday. Gallon, 23, of Chesterfield, Va., was arrested by university police and taken to the city jail about 2 a.m. Thursday, according to Fayetteville police Cpl. Julie Morman. He posted an $875 bond and was released. In March, Gallon was arrested on a misdemeanor possession of marijuana charge. That charge was dropped and Gallon pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor of obstructing governmental operations. In a statement Thursday, Nutt did not refer to Gallon's latest arrest or the previous case. "I have dismissed Jimarr Gallon from our football team for the remainder of the season for violating team rules," Nutt said. "I am very disappointed that a senior would exercise such poor judgment. We will continue to stress with both our words and actions that this kind of behavior is unacceptable in our program. As a football team, we will move forward and focus on this weekend's game." Kevin Trainor, a spokesman for the Razorbacks, said the dismissal essentially ends Gallon's college career. Gallon started nine out of 10 games this season and had 50 tackles. He played in all 14 of the Razorbacks' games last year and had 59 tackles. University police Lt. Gary Crain said officers pulled Gallon over early Thursday in a parking lot near a set of dormitories after noticing that the player had driven the wrong way on a one-way street. "When the officers stopped the vehicle for the traffic violation and contacted the driver, they smelled the aroma of alcoholic beverages. They saw two beers on the seat," Crain said. Crain said Gallon failed field sobriety tests and that, at the jail, the linebacker's blood-alcohol level was measured at 0.10 percent -- above the 0.08 legal limit in Arkansas. More than two dozen Razorback athletes have been arrested since Nutt arrived at Arkansas in 1998. The coach said Monday, after Olajubutu's arrest, that players had to show common sense and be smart. |
