Devers eliminated in semifinals of 100m hurdlesPosted: Tuesday August 26, 2003 3:39PM; Updated: Tuesday August 26, 2003 3:39PM SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) -- Three-time world champion Gail Devers was eliminated in the semifinals of the 100-meter hurdles Tuesday, yet another disappointment for a U.S. team that has struggled at the World Championships. Devers, who was favored for a fourth title because of her domination on the track circuit this summer, finished third in her semifinal heat -- from which only the top two runners qualified for the final. Devers stumbled after hitting the fifth of the 10 hurdles and never was able to catch the leaders. "There's nothing to mope about. I'm always the same. I give it my best. If it's not meant to be, it's not meant to be," she said. "I hit a hurdle, bad, at the wrong time. That's all it is." She was the latest American disappointment at the nine-day meet. The U.S. men were shut out of the medals in the 100 at the world meet for the first time since 1995, a non-American won the men's shot put for the first time in a decade and Stacy Dragila failed to get a medal in the women's pole vault after two straight titles. |
