The Final: For Your Viewing PleasureA Miss Match in Ann Arbor? Tune in to our tele-version of the sports worldPosted: Wednesday September 17, 2003 2:36PM; Updated: Wednesday September 17, 2003 2:40PM By John Walters
Last week Michigan went Wild On! Notre Dame, Alias the Fighting Irish. Vanderbilt announced that it will give its athletic program an Extreme Makeover, Ohio State continued to lead a Charmed existence and Arkansas beat Texas before a Tough Crowd in Austin. In honor of Sunday's Emmy Awards, we present a TV guide of recent news and peculiarities in college sports. The Odd Couple: First-year Oregon women's lacrosse coach Jen Larsen, whose program does not begin play until the 2004-05 season, is temporarily living with her real estate agent while she looks for a permanent home. Curb Your Enthusiasm: During Miami's 38-33 comeback win against Florida on Sept. 6, the Hurricanes twice were penalized for excessive celebration following touchdowns. Miami Vice: Miami (Ohio) kicker Jared Parseghian, great-grandnephew of coaching legend Ara Parseghian, was arrested for stealing a two-foot- tall statue of an ox clad in a purple cape and wizard's hat from an Oxford city park. He was charged with two counts of theft and has been suspended indefinitely from the team. Making the Band: Nebraska backup quarterback Brett Lindstrom is the lead singer in a rock band, Golliday, named in honor of former Cornhuskers tight end Aaron Golliday. Smallville: Northern Illinois defensive specialist Gina Guide is the shortest volleyball player in Division I at 4'10". (Not airing on SpikeTV.) Band of Brothers: UCLA defensive ends Dave and Mat Ball are identical twins. Joe Millionaire: Minnesota alumnus T. Denny Sanford, 67, donated $35 million to his alma mater toward the construction of an open-air, on-campus football stadium. For Love or Money: Miami quarterback Brock Berlin, a Shreveport, La., native, is dating former Miss Louisiana Brittney Rogers (who last March won $50,000 on Fear Factor). Punk'd: UMass athletic director Ian McCaw attended the Minutemen's 51-7 victory over Central Connecticut State on Sept. 6. Two days later he was introduced as the new athletic director at Baylor. McCaw reportedly never told his UMass staff that he was leaving. Men Behaving Badly: Iowa State defensive end Tyson Smith, on crutches after breaking his right leg in the Cyclones' Aug. 30 win over Northern Iowa, was arrested eight days later for domestic assault. He pled not guilty to the charge and has been suspended from the team. Total Request Live: Members of the Harvard men's swim team were unscheduled guests on MTV's popular afternoon music video show on Sept. 5. While visiting New York, the swimmers dressed in business suits and stood outside TRL's studio. Cohosts Hilarie Burton and Vanessa Minnillo, oblivious to the gents' identities, gushed about their "hunkiness," so fellow cohost Damien Fahey invited them inside for an on-air chat. Cheers: Here's a toast to Neil Parry of San Jose State. Parry, who had his right leg partially amputated in 2000 when he developed complications after fracturing the limb in a game against Texas-El Paso, has been medically cleared to play on the Spartans' punt-return unit against Nevada on Thursday. He will wear a prosthetic. Ask Milo: Trying to Solve an Old College MysteryWhat is the origin of the phrase, Give it the old college try? -- Jake, Syracuse '07 Milo began his quest at the oldest college in the United States. Harvard was founded in 1636 -- the first "petticoat raid" reportedly occurred a year later. Alas, the Crimson gave Milo's inquiry the old heave-ho. Undaunted, Milo dug into the archives of The New York Times and discovered the first use of the phrase in an Oct. 19, 1919 article written by future Hall of Fame pitcher (and former Bucknell University class prez) Christy Mathewson. Describing the batting stance of future Cooperstown peer Frankie Frisch, then a rookie, Mathewson wrote, "Frisch was taking a long hold on his club and the old college try at the ball."Frisch, by the way, may be the only Hall member whose nickname denotes his alma mater: the Fordham Flash.
