CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The San Jose Earthquakes acquired former Rookie of the Year Rodrigo Faria from the Chicago Fire on Wednesday for a conditional draft pick in 2004.
Faria, 26, played in five games for Chicago before departing for his native Brazil to attend to personal matters surrounding the death of his father in late May.
"This has been a difficult year for Rodrigo and we hope that a fresh start with a new club will allow him the opportunity to renew his career in Major League Soccer, " said Fire general manager Peter Wilt. "I spoke to Rodrigo yesterday and he was appreciative of his treatment by the Fire and he wished he could have done more to help the team."
Faria came to Chicago via a trade with the MetroStars on October 22, 2002 as compensation for the departure of former Fire coach Bob Bradley.
Faria had 20 goals and seven assists for the Metrostars in 2001 when he was named MLS Rookie of the Year.
