LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Yetunde Price, the eldest sister and personal assistant to tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, was fatally shot early Sunday, a publicist for Serena Williams told CNN.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Alba Yates told CNN that a Special Weapons Team had surrounded a location where they believe suspects have barricaded themselves and said county homicide detectives and Compton gang detectives were investigating.

"This is extremely devastating news," Raymone Baine said about the death of Price, a 31-year-old resident of Corona, about 40 miles east of Compton. "They are a very close-knit family."

Yates told CNN that deputies heard multiple gunshots while they were patrolling the area. When they arrived at the scene, they learned that a man and a woman in a white SUV had gotten into an altercation with some residents of the neighborhood. The woman, identified as Price, was shot "in the upper torso," Yates said.

She was transported to a hospital, where she died, the deputy said.

Police were looking for the SUV, Yates said.

Sheriff's Deputy Richard Pena said the shooting took place just outside the Los Angeles suburb of Compton, where the Williams sisters grew up, shortly after midnight. The shooting happened in the 1100 block of Greenleaf Boulevard in Compton, he said.

Venus and Serena Williams are the youngest of five daughters of Richard and Oracene Williams.

Price and Serena Williams were recently profiled in People Magazine, which is owned by CNN's parent company, AOL Time Warner.
