Myskina makes quarters in just 64 minutesPosted: Wednesday September 24, 2003 4:21PM; Updated: Wednesday September 24, 2003 7:30PM LEIPZIG, Germany (AP) -- World No. 10 Anastasia Myskina reached the quarterfinals of the Sparkassen Cup on Wednesday by beating Lina Krasnoroutskaya, 6-2, 6-3, in an all-Russian encounter. The third-seeded Myskina needed just 64 minutes to oust Krasnoroutskaya, taking advantage of her second match point with an overhead smash. Myskina, who beat Kim Clijsters on her way to the Leipzig final last year, next faces fellow Russian Nadia Petrova or German wild card Anna-Lena Groenefeld. Patty Schnyder of Switzerland staged her second come back in as many matches at the $585,000 event, upsetting fifth-seed Daniela Hantuchova, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (3). In the quarterfinals, she will face either world No. 1 Kim Clijsters of Belgium or Jelena Dokic of Serbia-Montenegro. Schnyder, ranked 23rd, was down 5-2 in the third set, but forced the tiebreaker and won when the Slovakian couldn't reach a drop shot after 2 hours 3 minutes. She also charged from behind to beat Elena Likhovtseva in the first round in three sets. "I don't know how it happens. Sometimes you have more comebacks in a week then in an entire year," Schnyder said. "It makes it even nicer." Clijsters is looking for her third Leipzig title after 2000 and 2001. On Thursday she plays her first match since taking two weeks vacation after losing the U.S. Open final to fellow Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne in Australia. Henin-Hardenne, ranked right behind Clijsters, is seeded second in Leipzig. She faces Czech player Denisa Chladkova in the second round after also taking two weeks off. The French and U.S. Open champion Henin-Hardenne could overtake Clijsters as No. 1 as early as Filderstadt, which starts on Oct. 6. In other action, Venezuelan qualifier Maria Vento-Kabchi bounced eighth-seeded Silvia Farina Elia of Italy, 7-5, 6-3. |
