ST. LOUIS (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter left Saturday's start against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fourth inning with a strained right biceps.

Carpenter, 15-5 with a 3.46 ERA, might have been hurt making a throw to first on Danny Bautista's grounder for the first out of the inning. He left after allowing a single to the next hitter, Shea Hillenbrand.

Carpenter skipped a start Aug. 15 at Atlanta as a precaution due to lower back spasms.

Dan Haren replaced Carpenter with one out in the fourth and a 3-0 lead.
