NEW YORK (CNN) -- Former baseball National League MVP Ken Caminiti died of an accidental drug overdose, a spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner said Monday.

Toxicology and tissue tests conducted after Caminiti died Oct. 10 in New York showed he died of acute intoxication due to the combined effects of cocaine and opiates with contributing factors that included coronary artery disease and an enlarged heart.

Caminiti's agent-lawyer, Rick Licht, told CNN that Caminiti, 41, had been visiting friends in New York when he was admitted to Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx.

The three-time All-Star third baseman had been in trouble in recent years.

After testing positive for cocaine use in February 2003, Caminiti served time at the Harris County jail outside of Houston, Texas.

Caminiti won the National League's Most Valuable Player award in 1996 while playing with the San Diego Padres.

He also played for pro teams in Houston and Atlanta.

He was a native of San Jose, Calif., and had been living near Houston.

He was divorced and is survived by three daughters, his parents, a brother and sister, Licht said.
