Magglio Ordonez |
RF |
Tigers |
5 years, $75 million |
This deal says more about the maligned city of Detroit, its oversized ballpark and its long-suffering ballclub than anything else. Apparently the Tigers have to overpay through the nose to get a marquee free agent to sign with them, or else Ordonez wouldn't have extracted such a king's ransom. (What would it take to bring an A-Rod to Detroit, a billion dollars?) There is an out-clause after the first year if Ordonez's bothersome knee sidelines him for more than 25 days. But after 2005 the other four years become guaranteed. More than likely, the Tigers are stuck with this contract, for better or worse.

Carlos Delgado |
1B |
Marlins |
4 years, $52 million |
How does the last major prize of the free-agent market goes to the budget-minded Marlins? Much of the contract is backloaded to coincide with Mike Hampton's monstrous deal coming off the books. Carlos Delgado has done nothing but rake his entire career, including an injury-shortened 2004 in which he still mashed 32 home runs and slugged .535. He gives the Fish a much-needed left-handed power hitter who has improved defensively in recent seasons. For the money, Delgado is a better buy than comparable corner infielders Richie Sexson or Troy Glaus. Plus, Florida did not have to give Delgado a no-trade clause, which means they can dump the salary at any time.

4 years, $36 million |
Everybody else is overpaying for pitchers, so why not the Dodgers? Derek Lowe's sinker should work well at Dodger Stadium, give or take some butchery by Jeff Kent at second base. Money aside, this does make the team better. But this is an enormous commitment for such an inconsistent pitcher. It's not as bad as the Russ Ortiz contract, but it's close.

Mets |
7 years, $119 million |
This is what the Mets do. They chase big names with gobs of money for the sake of backpage headlines. Carlos Beltran is a very good player who will do fine in New York. If the Mets are lucky, the no-trade clause won't come back to bite them. But Mike Cameron's value decreases substantially as a corner outfielder. They could have improved more so by signing J.D. Drew and Carlos Delgado while having money left for pitching and discarding Cliff Floyd.

Sure, Millwood is a risk. He pitched sparingly in the second half in 2004 because of elbow and groin injuries. But if he's sound, he'll give the Indians a deep rotation pitching behind C.C. Sabathia and Jake Westbrook. Plus, the Tribe will get a $4 million refund if he spends more than 20 days on the DL. Good signing.

This is a stunning move for these penny pinchers. Milton does represent an upgrade for this rotation. Then again, who doesn't? On the other hand, if they had this much to spend, why didn't they use it on Matt Clement, Al Leiter, David Wells or any of the other free-agent pitchers who are better than Milton?

Moises Alou becomes the fifth member of the Giants' lineup who will be 37 or older on Opening Day. Is this a ballclub or an AARP meeting? Alou is coming off a career-high 39-HR season and can still field surprisingly well despite a pair of creaky knees. He's always been a dangerous bat when healthy.

The Red Sox rightly recognized Jason Varitek as the backbone of the team. Of all their other free agents, Varitek was the only one who was irreplaceable. Where else can you find a dangerous switch-hitting catcher who is solid behind the plate? No matter what New York does, Boston is ready for its title defense.

In essence, the Dodgers are gambling that J.D. Drew's monster 2004 season is more indicative of future success than Adrian Beltre's. When healthy, Drew can replace Beltre's bat. But third base is a tougher position to fill than a corner outfield spot, so L.A. is taking a big risk with the injury prone Drew.

The Angels figured they had to spend the Matt Clement money somewhere. Orlando Cabrera is an upgrade from David Eckstein, but not by much, and the difference shouldn't warrant a contract this high. Series hype aside, Cabrera isn't much more than an above-average shortstop with low on-base skills.

The Red Sox continue to make sabermetrically sound moves. Statheads believe a pitchers' W-L record is greatly affected by luck, and Clement had an outstanding season for the Cubs despite the 9-13 mark in 2004, striking out 190 batters in 181 innings. He's a power right-hander well-suited for Fenway Park.

Is Scott Boras getting soft? How else to explain this bargain for a 25-year-old third baseman coming off a 48-HR season? Beltre's 2004 may have been a contract-year fluke, but the odds of him playing up to this deal are in Seattle's favor, especially when you consider he's just now entering his prime.

Orlando Cabrera had a good run in Boston, but Edgar Renteria is a major upgrade. Renteria, a career .289 hitter, is one of the game's best contact hitters. He's good for 40 doubles and 20 steals in any given season. An infield is only as good as its shortstop, and Renteria (two Gold Gloves) has anchored the best unit in the majors the past few years.
