An active winter under new ownership makes Anaheim the favorite to win the AL West. The Angels now have a solid rotation and power-laden lineup to go with their lights-out bullpen from last season. Best player
Vladimir Guerrero's back ailments apparently stemmed from of a lack of conditioning last season. Now healthy and in outstanding shape you can pencil him in for a .325 average., 40 home runs and 125 RBIs. And since the Angels are one of the few AL teams who like to steal bases, he'll top 20.
On the decline
Although Darin Erstad is switching to first base this season, years of all-out dives and running into outfield walls has taken a toll on him. His power and batting average have dropped dramatically since his breakout 2000 season and there's no reason to believe he'll bounce back big-time.
Position up for grabs
Shortstop: David Eckstein has had a stranglehold on the spot but his numbers slipped badly enough (.252 batting average, .325 OBP last season) to open the door to a challenge by phenom Alfredo Amezaga.
Cheap source of steals
Speedy utilityman Chone Figgins (223 stolen bases as a pro) can play second, short and the outfield. He'll also be Anaheim's primary pinch runner and could easily steal 20 bases.
Should something happen to Troy Percival
Manager Mike Scioscia has the luxury of two power arms in Brendan Donnelly and Francisco Rodriguez. The virtually unhittable Donnelly (1.58 ERA, three saves) is the most likely to get saves this season although "K-Rod" is being groomed as Percival's eventual replacement.
Don't believe the hype
Not far removed from a corked bat incident which earned him a lengthy suspension in Triple A, Jose Guillen's meteoric rise probably had a lot more to do with Cincinnati's cozy Great American Ballpark than most people think. He'll have solid stats, but won't warrant more than a third outfield slot on a fantasy team.
Don't forget
Adam Kennedy, Bengie Molina, Tim Salmon, Scot Shields
Don't bother
Jeff DaVannon, Shane Halter, John Lackey, Aaron Sele
