A rotation of Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, Matt Clement and Carlos Zambrano fortified by the addition of future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux gives the Northsiders a great chance to get back to the postseason. Once there, however, can those arms propel them past a century of postseason futility? Best player
Last season Prior was second in the NL in wins, second in strikeouts (245) and third in ERA. Not bad for a 23-year-old in his first full big league season. The sky's the limit for the power righty, who, had he not suffered a freak shoulder injury in a collision with Atlanta second baseman Marcus Giles, would've won 20 games and possibly his first Cy Young Award.
On the decline
Once mentioned in the same sentence as the AL's big three shortstops, Alex Gonzalez's power numbers have been respectable (38 homers the past two seasons), but his average dipped to a career-low .228 in 2003. His glove will keep him in the lineup, but his poor average should keep him out of yours.
Position up for grabs
Second Base. Last season's starter, Mark Grudzielanek, will have a tough time keeping Todd Walker's potent bat on the bench, especially at cozy Wrigley Field. Now known primarily for his defense, Grudzielanek hit .314 last year mainly while batting leadoff. Walker, who hit .289 and drove in 89 runs for the Red Sox in 2003, is not the fielder Grudzielanek is, but he'll provide enough pop to force Dusty Baker into a partial platoon by midseason.
Cheap source of steals
Although a backup for a majority of his career, Tom Goodwin ranks in the top 10 of active players with 364 stolen bases. He'll be the fourth outfielder and regular defensive replacement, making him worth a pick if you have the need for speed.
Should something happen to Joe Borowski
The Cubs brought in setup man extraordinaire LaTroy Hawkins, who saved 28 games as the Twins closer in 2001. Hawkins (15-3 the past two seasons) will provide insurance for Borowski and team with Mike Remlinger to form one of the NL's best lefty-righty setup tandems.
Don't believe the hype
Center fielder Corey Patterson says he's 100 percent recovered from a torn ACL, but the Cubs plan on bringing him along slowly. Even if he suffers a small setback this spring, Patterson would be worth drafting especially in keeper leagues.
Don't forget
Moises Alou, Michael Barrett, Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez
Don't bother
Kyle Farnsworth, Todd Hollandsworth, Jose Macias
