You'd think the loss of Curt Schilling would doom the Diamondbacks to being a second-division club, but quite the contrary Arizona's off-season offensive additions have the Big Unit and Co. thinking about October again.

Best player
The Brewers' constant state of rebuilding proved to be a boon to Arizona, enabling them to snare first baseman Richie Sexson. In his three full seasons with the Brewers Sexson hit 119 home runs and drove in 351 runs. Over the same span all of Arizona's first basemen combined to hit 74 home runs and drive in 282 runs. With quality table-setters like Alex Cintron, Steve Finley and Roberto Alomar hitting ahead of him, Sexson could drive in 140 runs.

On the decline
Something happened to Roberto Alomar on the way to the Hall of Fame. Not long ago Alomar was considered one of the game's best players. But since signing with the Mets in 2002, the 10-time Gold Glove winner and 12-time All Star has been disappointing at best. He bottomed out with career lows in batting and home runs in '03. Arizona fans and fantasy owners would be thrilled to see 15 home runs and 25 steals but the jury is out.

Position up for grabs
Catcher. Robby Hammock emerged as a budding star in a super-utility role last year. Poised to take over as fulltime catcher this spring, Hammock required surgery on cartilage in his knee and opened the door for veteran Brent Mayne. Expected to recover quickly, Hammock will catch at least 125 games and hit 15 to 20 home runs. In the short term, however, Mayne won't hurt your team as a replacement.

Cheap source of steals
Besides the rightfully undervalued Alomar, Steve Finley's speed (15 steals) always seems to be overlooked. This season as a leadoff hitter he'll be expected to run more than he has in the past.

Should something happen to Matt Mantei
Jose Valverde is ready to step right in as the Diamondbacks' closer. So ready, in fact, rumblings in Arizona have Mantei on the trading block and possibly moving by the end of the spring. Filling in last season for Mantei, Valverde was 10-for-11 in save opportunities with a 2.15 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 71 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings.

Don't believe the hype
Do you feel lucky? The Diamondbacks whole season hinges on Randy Johnson's surgically repaired knee surviving the rigors of a full season. He is one of the highest risk/reward players in fantasy this or any season. We suggest you let someone else take the chance.

Don't forget
Danny Bautista, Luis Gonzalez, Shea Hillenbrand, Oscar Villareal

Don't bother
Greg Colbrunn, Shane Reynolds, Steve Sparks
