The window of opportunity may be closing for Seattle's aging hitting corps, but the pitching staff is well stocked with young, live arms who will keep them in the Wild Card mix all season.

Best player
In his three seasons with Seattle, Bret Boone has been a fantasy superstar. A second baseman who can hit .300 with 30 home runs, 100-plus RBIs and 15 steals is hard to come by. Boone is clearly the majors' second best option at the position after Texas' Alfonso Soriano.

On the decline
In 2003, John Olerud hit only 10 home runs in more than 600 plate appearances and, at age 35, he might not be able to find his power stroke again. Olerud's average dipped to its lowest since 1991, and his .390 slugging percentage was a career low. Never a fantasy star, Olerud's value disappears unless he can hit .300 with 20 home runs and 90 RBIs.

Position up for grabs
Closer: Kazuhiro Sasaki's return to Japan will barely be felt because of the free-agent signing of Eddie Guardado, who had a combined 86 saves the last two seasons for the Twins and is expected to win the job. Shigetoshi Hasegawa, who was 16 for 17 in save opportunities last season filling in for an injured Sasaki, has as much value as a setup man as he does as a closer.

Cheap source of steals
The Mariners speed lies solely with the starters and won't come cheaply. Centerfielder Randy Winn (a combined 50 steals the last two seasons) is the most likely candidate to be a good value on draft day.

Should something happen to Eddie Guardado
Even with Guardado around, the righthanded Hasegawa is sure to get saves based on lefty-righty matchups. Righty Rafael Soriano has closer's stuff and when he returns from shoulder problems he'd get a look if the Mariners feel more comfortable keeping Hasegawa in his role as a setup man.

Don't believe the hype
Reports of Freddy Garcia's demise were greatly exaggerated. Although he hasn't pitched well since the middle of 2002, much of the problems can be attributed to ruptured eardrums which have been surgically repaired. Look for Garcia to bounce back and be one of the AL's biggest winners this season.

Don't forget
Rich Aurilia, Ryan Franklin, Edgar Martinez, Scott Spiezio

Don't bother
Quinton McCracken, Ramon Santiago, Dan Wilson
