DETROIT (AP) -- Ford Field, home of the NFL's Detroit Lions, will host the Mid-American Conference football championship game on Dec. 2.

The game matches the West and East division winners and will be televised by ESPN. Ford Field also is site of the Motor City Bowl, which features a MAC team and will be played Dec. 27.

"This is awesome, and it's great for the MAC and our Michigan schools to have the game at Ford Field," said Western Michigan athletic director Kathy Beauregard. "The championship game is going to be played at a neutral site, and that's where it should be played."

Since 2001, the game has alternated between the West and East champions.

Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Western Michigan are the three state schools in the MAC, and Toledo and Bowling Green are within 90 minutes of Ford Field.

On Nov. 6, Eastern Michigan plays Central Michigan at Ford Field, following a game between Great Lakes conference members Wayne State and Hillsdale.
