ReactionsRedskins fans rejoice in return of GibbsPosted: Friday January 9, 2004 1:27AM; Updated: Friday January 9, 2004 1:27AM SI.com's Don Banks and Peter King went Head2Head on whether Joe Gibbs can win another Super Bowl with the Redskins. Here are some of your responses: Don't forget about the 25 other men (coaches) ready to stand in his way to Super Bowl Sainthood. I pity Washington, DC. They can't move on. They have to live in the glory years. I also pity Dan Snyder. Poor guy, he can't figure out what to do so he goes to the memory books. Is he telling the sports world that no other coach can run a football team? The Washington fans are so stupid they don't see that looking to the past will NOT help their future. YES! His work ethic and his ability to command respect from the players is what the team needs, and Snyder will give him the backing he needs financially and he will surround himself with a great staff. Maybe not next year but in two of three we'll be contenders again! Right now, John Riggins would be the best running back on the Redskins. They need to get a true running back (maybe Corey Dillon) just to be a .500 team. The Skins don't have the slightest chance at a Super Bowl in the near future. People who keep stating the argument that Gibbs can't win in the era of free agency and the cap ignore the fact that Gibbs won three Super Bowls with different sets of personnel. The only two starting offensive players that were on both the 1982 and 1991 Super Bowl teams are Jeff Bostic and Art Monk. I think Coach Gibbs can handle the flux of different personnel. Hail to the Redskins! I think that was one of the best moves Mr. Snyder has made. I was on 14th street for all of the parades with the other Super Bowl celebrations. The team, the city needed a shot in the arm. Whoa!!! I see championships on the horizon. You think they are a bit worried in Dallas? As long as King Snyder's around, they're doomed. He should just buy a Super Bowl trophy. It will take two seasons to acquire the personnel necessary to reach the top, but with Joe Gibbs as his mentor, Patrick Ramsey will excel. Imagine how effective Ramsey could be if he were only sacked eight times all season, just like less-than-nimble-footed Mark Rypien was in 1991. Couple that with Gibbs' insistence on drafting intelligence and discipline over raw, reckless talent, and you have the ingredients for repeated success and higher retention of key personnel despite free agency. Fewer penalties and fewer audibles alone will result in a successful 2004. Change-Schmange. King is right: Joe Gibbs is a winner, and winners figure out how to keep winning. He's been just as successful in NASCAR as he was the first time around in the NFL; he'll figure it out yet again. Say, is Theisman still in shape? The "fun and gun" is on the run and nobody misses it! Spurrier's a good college level coach, but no one ever believed his stuff would work on the professional level. It'll take Joe Gibbs about six months to turn the Redskins into a football team again. By the time training camp opens the Redskins will be a totally different team. The first thing that he'll do is get rid of a few hopeless prima donnas. There will be at least two pet names gone from the Skins by next year. Need I name names? Finding a durable hard nosed running back who doesn't go down from a puff of wind will be the first item on the list, and then a decent blocking tight end. The Skins already have lots of talented players and Snyder still has lots of money! The only thing the Redskins needed to be a playoff team was a real football coach. Now they've got one! I believe Gibbs will win a lot of games and make the Redskins a respected team again but I think a Super Bowl will be far in the future. He may get to the Big Game after five years and he may win in six years but age with him is a factor also. Just how much energy does he have left? |
