San Diego's past six first draft picks include DB Rogers Beckett (2000) and QB Ryan Leaf (1998). So why should fans be excited about the team holding the No. 1 pick in April's draft?
Ben Roethlisberger, Larry Fitzgerald and Eli Manning are three good reasons.
Roethlisberger and Manning are regarded as the top two quarterbacks, which presents a dilemma for San Diego's front office: Stay the course with QB Drew Brees, a second-round choice in 2001, or start over (again).
If the Chargers stick with Brees (who was benched twice this season and is 4-16 in his past 20 starts), a trade is the most logical course of action; the Raiders, Cardinals and Giants all could use a QB, while the Falcons may make a move up to nab Fitzgerald. And the Chargers are not opposed to rolling the dice. In 2003 and '01, San Diego swapped its first pick to Philadelphia and Atlanta, respectively, to move down the board.
Last year, the Chargers traded the No. 15 choice to Philadelphia for first- (No. 30) and second-round picks, selecting CB Sammy Davis and S Terrence Kiel.
In 2001 San Diego opted out of the No. 1 spot in a deal with Atlanta in exchange for the No. 5 pick and a third-round choice in '01, a second-rounder in '02 and WR/KR Tim Dwight. Those three draft picks yielded RB LaDainian Tomlinson, CB Tay Cody (who was released this year) and WR Reche Caldwell.
