Broncos agree to terms with top pick WilliamsUpdated: Wednesday July 28, 2004 1:16AM ENGLEWOOD, Calif. (Ticker) -- The Denver Broncos on Tuesday night agreed to terms with linebacker D.J. Williams, their first-round pick in April's draft. Terms were not disclosed. The Broncos traded up seven spots in a deal with the Cincinnati Bengals in the week leading up to the draft, where they selected Williams with the 17th pick. "We're happy to get this done and have D.J in the fold," Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist said. "We have high expectations for him." Williams, who started his collegiate career at Miami as a fullback, recorded 241 tackles and 10 sacks in his career. In Denver, Williams will compete for a starting job at weakside linebacker. Williams' signing came hours after the club released veteran linebacker John Mobley, who still is recovering from a career-threatening neck injury. Former Oakland Raiders head coach and announcer John Madden once said Williams was the only player he ever saw who could make the jump directly from high school to the pros. © 2004 SportsTicker Enterprises, LP |
