Game 1: The Inside StoryPosted: Wednesday May 26, 2004 12:14AM; Updated: Wednesday May 26, 2004 12:45AM HERO: Jarome Iginla. Foiled on a breakaway, he tracked down his own rebound and scored his league-leading second shorthanded goal to give the Flames a 2-0 lead late in the second period. GOAT: Cory Stillman. Just 17 seconds after the Lightning climbed within 3-1, he got a penalty for delivering an elbow to the head of Marcus Nilson, halting Tampa Bay's momentum. TURNING POINT: Trailing 1-0 late in the second period, the Lightning were on the power play when Dave Andreychuk's pass hopped over the stick of Fredrik Modin. That sent Iginla in on a breakaway that ended in a shorthanded goal. BY THE NUMBERS: The Flames have not allowed a first-period goal in an NHL-record nine consecutive playoff games. Tampa Bay has scored a power-play goal in seven straight games. NOT IN THE BOXSCORE: Calgary improved to 5-0 in the playoffs when scoring a goal in the first 10 minutes of the game. At 40, Tampa Bay captain Dave Andreychuk became the oldest player to make his Stanley Cup Finals debut. TRENDS: Teams winning Game One of the Finals have gone on to win the Stanley Cup 78.5 percent (51-of-65) of the time. The last team to win the Cup after losing Game One was the 2002 Detroit Red Wings. THEY SAID IT: "This was pretty ugly. We could have used a tennis racquet." -- Lightning defenseman Dan Boyle. © 2004 SportsTicker Enterprises, LP
