Teenage Czech athlete killed by javelin

PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) -- A 13-year-old javelin thrower died Tuesday, several days after he was hit by a javelin at an athletics meet, a news agency reported.

The boy was seriously injured Saturday in the town of Liberec, 106 kilometers (66 miles) north of Prague, when he was pierced by a javelin during training, the CTK news agency said.

The boy underwent a six-hour operation after the accident, but had remained in critical condition since, CTK reported.

"A heart failure was a likely cause of his death," Dr. Radko Janosek of the Liberec regional hospital told The agency.

Police were investigating.
