Highlights from NBC's Olympic coveragePosted: Saturday August 28, 2004 2:00AM; Updated: Saturday August 28, 2004 3:34AM (AP) -- A look at NBC's coverage of the Summer Olympics from Athens: HIGHLIGHT: The U.S. soccer team's thrilling 2-1 gold medal win over Brazil in overtime and, to a lesser extent, the men's basketball team's hard-fought win over Spain. NBC, to its credit, telecast both games live and in full (basketball on USA). The soccer game was uninterrupted by commercials to avoid the risk of missing a goal. LOWLIGHT: Unfortunately for NBC, the soccer match was in the afternoon, U.S. eastern time, and the basketball game in the morning. That left huge chunks of NBC's prime-time Thursday devoted to preliminary races on the track and, at the pool, dive after dive after zzzzzzzzzzzzz ... GOOD FARE: Put that taxi driver on the payroll! Most of track analyst Lewis Johnson's understanding of the Greek crowd's demonstration before the men's 200-meter sprint seemed to come from a cabbie, who tipped him off that Thursday was a hot ticket because people were angry over Greek sprinter Kostas Kenteris' withdrawal from the games after missing a drug test. At the same time, partner Tom Hammond was too quick to dismiss the crowd's view. QUOTES: "As a group, you need to work on the anthem. That was not what Francis Scott Key intended." -- Bob Costas, to five U.S. soccer players, after watching tape of their medal ceremony attempt at "The Star Spangled Banner." "You should see us karaoke." -- Brandi Chastain, to Costas.
