Truth + RumorsPosted: Monday June 28, 2004 10:07AM; Updated: Monday June 28, 2004 1:31PM
White Sox GM Ken Williams hardly distanced himself from a possible deal involving free agent-to-be Magglio Ordonez. Andruw Jones, who is signed with Atlanta through 2007, is a definite possibility. Upset about hearing that the White Sox had acquired Freddy Garcia, George Steinbrenner called an impromptu between-games meeting yesterday to talk about Seattle left-hander Jaime Moyer and Braves right-hander Russ Ortiz. Following up on a good conversation with Magic GM John Weisbrod, Steve Francis is flying to Orlando, where he'll likely meet with team officials. "You know I was mad [about the trade]," Francis said. "But now I'm cool. I'm cool about everything." The Mets could have landed Freddy Garcia, but they were unwilling to part with their best prospect, David Wright. Unless the Nets can get rid of Kerry Kittles' $10 million salary, the chances of returning the big three -- Jason Kidd, Kenyon Martin and Richard Jefferson -- are dim. When Angels manager Mike Scioscia told Ramon Ortiz, a 16-game winner last year, that he would be returning to the bullpen, Ortiz asked to be traded. Vanderbilt has given Ohio State permission to talk to men's basketball coach Kevin Stallings. Nuggets GM Kiki Vandeweghe dispelled rumors that Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik would be fired this week, and has said Bzdelik "has a contract for next year" and is "our coach." Aaron Goodwin, agent for Bulls restricted free agent Jamal Crawford, said his client has "definite interest" in the Denver Nuggets, especially "because of what Kiki's doing there." If the Mets fall out of the NL East race, don't be surprised if Tom Glavine accepts a trade to Boston, his hometown. When Boston's Ramiro Mendoza finally shows he's healthy, he could be on the move to Baltimore. If the San Francisco rotation stays as-is and Jason Schmidt starts the final day before the All-Star break, Giants owner Peter Magowan said he does not want Schmidt to pitch in the All-Star Game. Schmidt said he'd be very disappointed if Magowan forbade him to appear in the game. According to sources close to the Mavericks, Del Harris has taken himself out of the running for the Hawks' head coaching job, and will remain as an assistant to Don Nelson. Currently, Harris is working as coach of the Chinese national team. |
