Knicks GM Isiah Thomas may have to take aging veteran Scottie Pippen to acquire Jamal Crawford from Chicago. The Nets remain optimistic that they can pull off a deal with the Blazers, sending Kerry Kittles and Aaron Williams to Portland for Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Dallas, Cleveland, Minnesota and Golden State all have shown interest in dealing for Magic forward Drew Gooden. Free agent Jon Barry, who has drawn attention from the Hawks, would welcome another contract with Denver, and hopes to have a deal done before his son starts kindergarten next month. The Timberwolves may pursue free-agent power forward Karl Malone. MLB The Marlins are intensely eyeing outfielders Steve Finley (Arizona) and Larry Walker (Colorado), who both provide power from the left side. Both players have garnered interest from a handful of other teams. Diamondbacks owner Jerry Colangelo is Europe until early next week. The Yankees will have to await his return before they get any closer to acquiring Randy Johnson. Arizona wants a few young pitchers with bright futures in return for Johnson, but the franchise has been unimpressed with New York's farm talent. The Dodgers appear to be very interested in Houston outfielder Carlos Beltran. Los Angeles probably would offer the Astros setup man Guillermo Mota for Beltran. Minnesota, Anaheim and San Francisco all had scouts in Atlanta to watch Pirates pitcher Kris Benson win his eighth game of the season last night. Benson boasts a 1.88 ERA in his last five starts. Angels GM Bill Stoneman says he has no plans to add a left-handed arm to his bullpen, which consists of seven right-handers. The Red Sox have talked to Toronto about dealing for right-handed reliever Terry Adams. The Rangers are interested in Shawn Estes, but will not send the Rockies a significant major league player in return, such as Kevin Mench or Laynce Nix. The Tigers have three coaches -- bench coach Kirk Gibson, hitting coach Bruce Fields and bullpen coach Lance Parrish -- who could take managerial positions very soon. John Hart will remain the Rangers general manager through, and possibly beyond, 2005. NFL Jamal Lewis' drug conspiracy case, which once was scheduled for August, now probably will occur during the regular season or beyond. 49ers quarterback Tim Rattay should be ready to play before the start of the regular season. |
