1. Amoeba Music
CAL
In 1998, Rolling Stone crowned Amoeba the best and biggest independent record store in the country. The original store on Telegraph Avenue is littered with used CDs and is a vinyl mecca. Top seller: Björk, Medúlla
2. Albums on the Hill
COLORADO
This 28-year-old den of 45s can get you special orders overnight and throws a midnight sale to get Tuesday's new releases out ASAP. Top seller: Crown City Rockers, Earthtones
3. Other Music
NEW YORK UNIVERSITY
NYU parents receive crazy bills because the store accepts Campus Cash. Students go nuts buying the best in electronica, avant-garde jazz and indie rock. Top seller: Arcade Fire, Funeral
4. Vinyl Fever
FLORIDA STATE
Seminoles flock to Fever because it has the largest vinyl collection in Tallahassee. In March, Fever opened its doors for the Playboy "Girls of the ACC" photo shoot. What sweethearts. Top seller: Nelly, Suit
5. Knowledge Records
GRAMBLING
Owned by a Grambling grad, Knowledge is a stopping point for major urban acts, such as Too Short, that roll through the Louisiana town. Top seller: Nelly, Sweat
6. Love Garden Sounds
KANSAS
If you're looking to buy or sell vinyl, one Love-ly employee specializes in just that. LPs account for a third of the store's sales. Don't know what you want? Grab anything and head for the listening station. Top seller: The Black Keys, Rubber Factory
7. Flat, Black and Circular
MICHIGAN STATE
Its name boasts of a supreme vinyl collection, but FBC also has an extensive underground rap and indie rock selection. Top seller: Modest Mouse, Good News for People Who Love Bad News
8. The Electric Fetus
MINNESOTA
Make sure to check out the lifestyle department. We recommend Pimp Daddy novelty body detergent, because what goes better with Nelly? Top seller: Nelly, Sweat
9. Schoolkids Records
DUKE, NORTH CAROLINA
The store is a uniter, not a divider. Both Duke and UNC students pick at the newly expanded jazz, folk, bluegrass and blues section. Top seller: Garden State soundtrack
10. Manifest Discs and Tapes
SOUTH CAROLINA
Manifest, which once hosted the Ramones and 2 Live Crew, was saved from extinction last March. Now the store is working to bring back big names; Sister Hazel played there this month. Top sellers: Nelly, Sweat, Suit
