Soccer-Nations-Profile of Nigeria coach, ChukwuPosted: Tuesday January 20, 2004 10:55AM; Updated: Tuesday January 20, 2004 10:53AM JOHANNESBURG, Jan 20 (Reuters) -- Nigeria coach Christian Chukwu has been on the winners' podium twice at past African Nations Cup finals and will be seeking a hat-trick in Tunisia. Chukwu, popularly known as "The Chairman," was captain of the Nigerian team who won the Nations Cup in 1980 and an assistant coach when the Super Eagles were last victorious at the African championship in Tunisia 10 years ago. Chukwu worked under the controversial Dutch coach Clemens Westerhof, before going to Kenya for a spell in charge of their national team. Chukwu took over from Festus Onigbinde as Nigerian coach after the 2002 World Cup, where the Super Eagles failed to get past the first round. Copyright 2004 Reuters Limited. All rights reserved. |
