Notes and facts
---------------
FRANCE
+ France have not conceded a goal in 1,032 minutes of
international football. The last goal that France conceded was
Tuncay Sanli's goal for Turkey in the 48th minute of the
Confederations Cup semi-final in June 2003.
+ France know that the holders have started their title
defence with a triumph only once in the last five editions that
included the reigning champions.
+ Nine of France's Euro 2004 squad played in the last
meeting between the two sides in September 2000.
+ If Lilian Thuram makes an appearance it will be his 100th
international cap. He will then join six other centurions at
Euro 2004.
+ Thuram would be only the third Frenchman to reach the
century. Marcel Desailly, 115 caps, and Didier Deschamps 103
caps are the other two.
+ France have not lost their opening match at a European
Championship finals since the very first competition in 1960
when they lost 5-4 to Yugoslavia. This match is still the
highest scoring match in the European Championship finals
history.
+ No nation has ever successfully defended their European
Championship title. The reigning champions have started their
title defence with a victory only once in the last five European
Championships. That was the Netherlands in 1992.
+ The French Euro 2004 squad contains more players from the
English premier league (nine) than the French Ligue 1 (eight).
+ The French squad contains 10 players who were also in the
Euro 2000 winning squad.
+ France were the last host nation to win the European
Championship.
+ France have been unbeaten in competitive matches for the
last two years. Their last defeat in a competitive match was
their 2-0 defeat to Denmark at World Cup 2002.
ENGLAND
+ Five of England's Euro 2004 squad played in the last
meeting with France in September 2000. Sol Campbell, David
Beckham, Paul Scholes, Kieron Dyer and Michael Owen. Owen scored
England's late equaliser.
+ Darius Vassell will celebrate his 25th birthday on the day
of the match.
+ If Michael Owen scores he will move in to the top ten
all-time leading England scorers, equalling Bryan Robson's tally
of 26.
+ England have only been on the losing side once when Steven
Gerrard has played. This was the 1-0 friendly defeat in Sweden
in March this year.
+ Wayne Rooney would break the record for youngest scorer in
a European Championship finals match if he scores against
France. He will be 18 years, 7 months and 20 days old. The
record was set by Yugoslavia's Dragan Stojkovic who was 19
years, three months and 16 days old when he scored against
France on 19 June, 1984.
+ England have failed to progress from the group stage on
four occasions (1980, 1988, 1992 and 2000). They reached the
semi-finals as hosts in 1996 and third place in 1968.
+ England have never won their opening match in the European
Championship.
+ This match could see 24 club team mates play each other.
The England and France squad combined hold seven Chelsea
players, six Arsenal and Manchester United players, three Bayern
Munich team mates and two Real Madrid players. No other Euro
2004 match features so many club team mates.
+ England are coached by Swede Sven Goran Eriksson. No
country has ever won the World Cup or European Championship with
a foreign manager.
MISCELLANY
+ On the two occasions England have won international
trophies (World Cup 1966, Le Tournoi 1997) they have faced, and
beaten, France.
+ This is only the second time France and England have met
in a European Championship finals match. Their previous meeting
at Euro 92 ended 0-0.
+ At Euro 92 both England and France failed to progress from
Group One. This is the only time France have failed to progress
from the group stage in a European Championship.
+ In competitive matches England have a positive record
against France with two wins, two draws and one defeat. Their
sole defeat came in a 1964 European Championship qualifying
match which France won 5-2.
+ Both France and England were unbeaten in qualifying.
France gained maximum points from their qualifying campaign.
They were the only nation of the 50 involved in qualifying not
to drop a point.
