BERLIN, July 26 (Reuters) -- Factbox on Juergen Klinsmann who agreed with the German FA on Monday to become Germany's next national soccer coach:

1964 - Born July 30, Goeppingen.

1972 - Starts playing football at TB Gingen before moving to SC Geislingen in 1974

1978 - Joins Stuttgart Kickers as a youth player.

1980 - Plays three games for German national youth B-team but fails to make the grade regularly at youth level.

1982 - Get his first break with second division Kickers and becomes important part of first team.

1983 - In 1983-84 season is one of leading second division scorers with 19 goals from 35 league appearances.

1984 - Joins Stuttgart's leading club VfB and In his first season he is club's second top goalscorer with 15 goals. Makes debut in German under-21 national team.

1986 - In March makes his name across the country by becoming only the 11th player in Bundesliga history to score five goals in a match.

1987 - Makes full international debut in 1-1 draw with Brazil during short South American tour in December.

1988 - Bundesliga's top scorer in 1987-88 season with 19 goals. Starts to make an big impression with national team during European championship finals in Germany. Also part of Olympic team at Seoul Games which wins bronze medal. Voted German Footballer of the Year.

1989 - Helps VfB reach UEFA Cup final when they lose to Diego Maradona-inspired Napoli. At end of season makes first move abroad, to Italy and Inter Milan.

1990 - Makes a great start in Serie A scoring 13 times in his first season. Later in year enjoys his greatest triumph as West Germany win the World Cup and he shows brilliant form during whole of tournament.

1991 - Wins UEFA Cup with Inter after 2-1 aggregate win over AS Roma in two-legged final.

1992 - Is not in first-choice line-up at start of European championship finals in Sweden but gets a break after Rudi Voeller forced home with injury. Germany lose in the final to Denmark. Klinsmann under fire in Milan, however, and decides to leave to join Monaco in French first division.

1993 - Klinsmann makes big impression during summer tournament in United States and becomes important part of marketing for World Cup the following year.

1994 - Despite Germany's disappointing time at World Cup finals when they lose in quarter-finals Klinsmann is a major success. Surprises football world by signing for Tottenham Hotspur after the World Cup.

1995 - Overcomes reputation for theatrics in England and becomes very popular in England, voted Footballer of the Year in first season. In February 1995 captains national team for first time against Spain. At end of season leaves Tottenham to join Bayern Munich.

1996 - Wins UEFA Cup with Bayern Munich and captains Germany to triumph at Euro'96 in England despite injury in later stages of competition. But at start of 1996-97 season struggles to settle down at Bayern because of the defensive tactics of Italian coach Giovanni Trapattoni and squabbling at club. Threatens to leave halfway through the season.

May 1997 - Joins Sampdoria in Italy but stays only half a season, scoring twice goals in eight league appearances.

December 1997 - Makes hugely popular return to Tottenham for a second spell and his nine league goals in 15 appearances -- four in one match in a 6-2 win over Wimbledon -- helps saves them from relegation.

July 1998 - Retires as a player following Germany's elimination from the World Cup finals in France, making the last of his 108 national appearances (47 goals) in quarter-final defeat to Croatia. Retires to the United States with his wife and family.

1998-2004 - Works in various ambassadorial roles for German FA, FIFA and commercial organisations and plays a part in organisational plans for 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

July 26 2004 - Announcement made by German FA that he has agreed to become new German national coach until end of 2006 World Cup finals.
