Galaxy to be short-handed SaturdayPosted: Wednesday September 1, 2004 6:49PM; Updated: Wednesday September 1, 2004 6:49PM CARSON, Calif. (AP) -- The Los Angeles Galaxy will be without leading scorer Carlos Ruiz, four other starters and a key reserve for Saturday night's game at Columbus because of national team commitments and suspensions. Ruiz and fellow forward Alejandro Moreno, midfielder Cobi Jones and defender Tyrone Marshall all have been recalled by the national teams for FIFA World Cup qualifiers this weekend and next Wednesday. Defender Paul Broome and midfielder Marcelo Saragosa both will be serving one-game suspensions. Each surpassed the caution point limits by receiving yellow cards in the 1-1 tie with the Chicago Fire Aug. 21. Rookie defender Chris Aloisi will be sidelined for at least two weeks after spraining the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during a scrimmage Monday, a spokesman for the Major League Soccer team said. Aloisi has played in four of the Galaxy's 23 games. Coach Steve Sampson declined to specifically reveal the replacements for the missing players during a conference call with reporters. Defender Chris Albright will return to action after serving a two-game suspension. Defenders Hong Myung-Bo and Danny Califf and rookie midfielder-forward Joseph Ngwenya are expected to receive playing time, Sampson said. The Galaxy (9-6-8) is 0-5-1 in the last six games. |
