RABAT (Reuters) -- Moroccan striker Hicham Zerouali, who formerly played with Aberdeen in Scotland, died in a car accident in Rabat on Sunday when he lost control of his car and hit a tree, the official MAP news agency reported.

The 27-year-old international had scored twice on Saturday for his club Royal Armed Forces in a league match and was part of their cup winning side last month when they won Morocco's Throne Cup.

Zerouali scored three goals in 17 appearances for the national team and played for Morocco at the 2002 African Nations Cup finals in Mali.

He was also part of the national team last month when they played a friendly international against Burkina Faso.

Zerouali played for two and a half seasons in Scotland where he was a great favourite of the Aberdeen fans who nicknamed him "Zero." He was also allowed to wear the number "zero" as his squad number on shirt.

After playing in Scotland between January 2000 and May 2002, and scoring 13 goals for Aberdeen, he moved to Al Nasr in the United Arab Emirates. He returned to play in Morocco last year.
