Brandi, Dulko advance at Wismilak InternationalPosted: Monday September 13, 2004 7:31PM; Updated: Monday September 13, 2004 7:31PM BALI, Indonesia (AP) -- Seventh-seeded Gisela Dulko of Argentina won in straight sets Monday to reach the second round of the Wismilak International, a tournament facing tighter security following last week's bombing outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta. Two Russian stars -- U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and top-seeded Anastasia Myskina, the French Open champ -- received byes into the second round. Kuznetsova won the Wismilak title in 2002. Myskina said she was not deterred by the bombing in which nine people were killed and more than 170 others injured. "I flew from Moscow the next day, even though people were trying to tell me I shouldn't come," she said. "But we have to try to bring peace through sports, and that's why I'm here." Players will be assigned armed guards and fans will be screened during the event, where security has been a priority since 202 people died in the Bali bombings two years ago. Dulko beat Indonesian qualifier Ayu Fani Damayanti 6-3, 6-1 on the first day. Marta Marrero of Spain topped Jill Craybas of the United States 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 after wasting two match points in the second set; Kristina Brandi of Puerto Rico defeated Saori Obata of Japan 6-1 6-2; and Maria Elena Camerin of Italy downed Tina Pisnik of Slovakia 7-5, 6-2. Kuznetsova's U.S. Open final victory Sunday came against countrywoman Elena Dementieva, the 2003 Wismilak winner. |
