Schuettler wins opener in Beijing's China OpenPosted: Monday September 13, 2004 7:33PM; Updated: Monday September 13, 2004 7:33PM BEIJING (AP) -- Fourth-seeded Rainer Schuettler, trying to rebound from a quick exit at the U.S. Open, defeated Australia's Paul Baccanello 6-3, 6-4 Monday in the first round of the China Open. Schuettler was seeded 11th at the U.S. Open but lost in the first round. He was runner-up in Olympic doubles for Germany last month with Nicolas Kiefer. In another match at the Beijing Tennis Center, Finland's Jarkko Nieminen downed Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5, 6-4. The hardcourt tournament features top-seeded Carlos Moya, French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero and Marat Safin. The women's field is led by Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams. |
