BEIJING (AP) -- Fourth-seeded Rainer Schuettler, trying to rebound from a quick exit at the U.S. Open, defeated Australia's Paul Baccanello 6-3, 6-4 Monday in the first round of the China Open.

Schuettler was seeded 11th at the U.S. Open but lost in the first round. He was runner-up in Olympic doubles for Germany last month with Nicolas Kiefer.
