Garciaparra undergoes groin surgeryPosted: Wednesday April 27, 2005 3:58PM; Updated: Wednesday April 27, 2005 4:00PM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Chicago Cubs shortstop Nomar Garciaparra underwent surgery on his torn left groin Wednesday. The 30-minute surgery, which was performed by Dr. Bill Meyers at the Drexel University School of Medicine, involved the reinforcement of the abdominal-groin musculature. There is no immediate timetable for Garciaparra's return. The five-time All-Star must wait at least two weeks before beginning rehabilitation. Garciaparra chose not to have surgery on the ruptured area itself. The procedure instead focused on the soft groin tissue surrounding the detached muscle area. Garciaparra suffered the injury in an April 20 game against St. Louis. After hitting a ground ball in the third inning, he collapsed in excruciating pain upon exiting the batter's box and had to be carried off the field. Acquired from the Boston Red Sox in a four-team deal at the trade deadline in 2004, Garciaparra was hitting just .157 with four RBI in 51 at-bats this season. The 31-year-old entered this season with a .322 career average and won American League batting titles in 1999 (.357) and 2000 (.372). After averaging more than 142 games in his first four full seasons in the majors, Garciaparra missed all but 21 contests in 2001 after having surgery on his right wrist in spring training. Last year, he did not make his season debut until June 9 because of right Achilles tendinitis. © 2005 SportsTicker Enterprises, LP |
