Tough breakCrosby likely done for season with fractured anklePosted: Wednesday August 31, 2005 7:16PM; Updated: Wednesday August 31, 2005 7:16PM OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Oakland Athletics will have to win the American League West Division without shortstop Bobby Crosby. The Athletics placed the reigning AL Rookie of the Year on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a fractured left ankle. Crosby suffered the injury Sunday at Baltimore in a collision with Orioles catcher Sal Fasano. The injury, originally diagnosed a contusion, likely will sideline Crosby for the remainder of the regular season. Losing Crosby is a blow for the Athletics (75-56), who hold a two-game lead over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the West. It is the second stint on the DL this season for Crosby, who was sidelined from April 5-May 30 with two fractured ribs. The A's were 17-32 and 12 1/2 games behind the Angels when Crosby was activated and have gone 58-24 since. Crosby, 25, was hitting .286 with nine homers and 38 RBI in 77 games. He hit .239 with 22 homers and 64 RBIs in 151 during his rookie campaign. To replace Crosby on the roster, the A's recalled veteran infielder Keith Ginter from Triple-A Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League. Ginter hit .167 with three homers and 25 RBIx in 46 games earlier this season with Oakland. © 2005 SportsTicker Enterprises, LP |
