ATLANTA (Ticker) - Louisiana State forward Seimone Augustus was named as the winner of the Naismith Award, honoring the women's college basketball player of the year, on Tuesday.
Augustus averaged 20.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game and led LSU to a No. 1 ranking in the NCAA Tournament. However, the Lady Tigers squandered a 15-point lead in a 68-57 loss to Baylor in the national semifinals on Sunday.
Augustus, a 6-1 junior, will be presented with the award on April 8 at the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
"Seimone was a dominant presence on the basketball court this season," Atlanta Tipoff Club president Gary Stokan said. "She has had an outstanding season and will undoubtedly encounter equally as much success in her senior year and future career."
The other finalists were Monique Currie of Duke, Jessica Davenport of Ohio State and Sandora Irvin of Texas Christian.
