"I don't like it being called the Roy Williams rule because he's a good football player and he did absolutely nothing illegal," said McKay, also the Falcons general manager. "I don't like the perception that it's focused on one guy, because that was not our intent." Maybe not. But somebody in Dallas should consider himself on notice: The world is watching. Leave our skill players alone! And finally this week, I'm also happy to report that AstroTurf is officially a thing of the past. The Rams and Colts both have new playing surfaces this season, with both teams' indoor fields switching to FieldTurf, which has become the standard for artificial fields. The synthetic surface has been likened to playing on natural grass. A survey conducted by the NFL Players' Association following the 2004 season ranked the Rams' surface as the second-worst in the league last season -- behind the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. The Rams had played on the same carpeted concrete surface since the dome opened in 1995 and head coach Mike Martz has often complained about the unforgiving nature of the surface. So have I. In column published here back in 2001, I stated the case like this: "The NFL has become one of the most popular and profitable sports leagues ever primarily because it boasts one of the most uniquely talented, highly-paid, hard-to-replace work forces known to man. "That being the case, why on earth do they continue to put that work force at risk by sending it out to do battle on inferior playing surfaces?" It took a while, but I'm glad the league finally saw things my way and addressed the issue. Now, let the (higher scoring, healthier) games continue unabated!
