Ambush Award: Carnell Williams, RB, Buccaneers

Even factoring in last Sunday's injury-marred effort against the Lions, no player in recent memory has roared out of the chute with the alacrity Williams did.

In fact, his first thee weeks were of historic significance. So much so that the Pro Football Hall of Fame came calling -- asking for this shoes and gloves -- after Williams made history in Week 3 at Lambeau Field by galloping for 158 yards against the Packers, giving him 434 rushing yards on the season.

That is the most rushing yards any player has gained in his first three career games in the 86-year history of the National Football League, breaking the 50-year-old record of 410, set by Baltimore's Alan Ameche.

Yes, you read that correctly -- 50 years.

Williams is also the first player in league history to open his career with three consecutive 100-yard games. In honor of those incredible feats, his shoes and gloves will be on permanent display in the Hall.

"It's a great honor," said Williams. "I never thought that could possibly happen. It's a great feeling. But it's still early. This is a long season and it doesn't stop here. I know as a player I can't be complacent, and I know that without those guys up front this wouldn't be possible at all."

Comeback Player: Stephen Davis, RB, Panthers

Let's see. ... He's over 30 years of age; he's coming off controversial (and often career-ending) microfracture surgery on his knee; and he has a talented youngster, DeShaun Foster, pushing him for playing time.

So, if you -- like me and just about every "expert" on earth -- wrote Davis off, who can blame you? It only made sense. Except nobody told Davis.

In four games this season, he has 245 yards on 73 carries. And even though his per-carry average has fallen -- from 6.2 yards per in the season opener to just 2.7 yards per rush over his last three contests -- Davis continues to please fantasy owners thanks to his work near the goal line.

With six rushing touchdowns already this season, Davis is on pace to become the first Carolina running back in team history to run for more than 10 touchdowns in a season. Davis set the record in 2003 with eight. Not bad for a gimpy old fella.

Candy Bone Award: Chad Pennington, QB, Jets

While his season didn't officially end until Pennington was injured Sept. 25 against the Jacksonville Jaguars when he was sacked on consecutive plays, anybody who watched him labor through the two-plus games prior to going down for good had to know the former Marshall star had never fully recovered from the rotator cuff originally torn last November.

Here's hoping those who went against conventional wisdom -- and ignored the fact he wasn't able to even begin throwing the ball until late June -- enjoy the touchdown passes he managed to complete before calling it a season. Both of them.

There you have it. Always good to shine the light of recognition on those who most deserve it. See you next week.
