What We Learned

Alabama: The Crimson Tide is rolling once again, and the way they look, there will be more big wins ahead -- perhaps even an SEC title. They're extremely well-balanced, with a dangerous offense and a stifling defense. On offense, 'Bama's young line more than held its own against a tough Florida front seven. That gave plenty of time for quarterback Brodie Croyle to hook up with his corps of speedy wideouts. Tyrone Prothro (until he broke his leg in the fourth quarter) was all over the field for the Tide, returning kicks and catching passes. He even lined up under center in the first half. As for the Tide's defense, it solidified its reputation as one of the nation's best, holding the Gators to just 326 total yards. Linebackers DeMeco Ryans, Freddie Roach and Juwan Simpson spent a lot of time in the Florida backfield harassing quarterback Chris Leak, and Alabama's front four dominated the line of scrimmage.

Florida: Leak doesn't seem comfortable running the "option" portion of head coach Urban Meyer's spread-option offense. Leak is a fantastic pocket passer, and runs well when the pocket collapses, but he looks like he's not that crazy about keeping the ball on the option. That might be one problem with the Gators' running game, which only managed 139 yards today. Florida lacks a go-to running back, and its offensive line was pushed all over the field by the 'Bama front four. On defense, Florida's line -- thought to be a strength before the game -- gave up several big running plays and failed to put any significant pressure on Croyle. The secondary committed too many errors in coverage, most notably on Alabama's first play from scrimmage, when there was no safety help for cornerback Vernell Brown. Left one-on-one against Prothro, Brown gave up an 88-yard touchdown pass.

Player Who Impressed Me

Alabama split end Prothro. It looks like the junior is done until next season, but when he touched the ball he was amazing. He finished with five catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Losing him is a major blow to the Crimson Tide offense, which fed off of his playmaking ability.

Locker Room Confidential

This was such a big win for 'Bama that after the game, its players led the student section in cheers and continued celebrating for nearly 15 minutes. It was hard to get the team off the field. ... Croyle was asked in the post-game press conference about the wisdom of leaving the starters in so late. Prothro injured himself going for a jump-ball in the end zone when the Tide was already up 31-3. Croyle, who hurt his knee last year during the second half of a whipping of Western Carolina, said: "You don't take your starters out against one of the top teams in the country with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter." ... Among those congratulating Croyle after the game was former Dolphins head coach Don Shula, the father of Alabama coach Mike Shula.

The Big Picture

For 'Bama -- now 5-0 heading into its off-week -- the sky would certainly seem to be the limit. The loss of Prothro is huge, but there are enough weapons on offense -- Croyle, running back Ken Darby and wideout D.J. Hall -- to keep things rolling. The strength of the team, however, is the defense, and at this point, it appears to be a championship unit.

Florida is going to have to write this game off. It was pretty much a disaster for the Gators from the opening kickoff. They have a real problem running the ball, and the defense suddenly doesn't seem so dominant. Still, there is enough talent on Meyer's squad that a return date against Alabama in the SEC Championship game isn't out of the question.
