PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - Following the lead of the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday reached agreement with defensive tackle Mike Patterson, their first-round pick in April's draft, on a five-year contract.

Earlier Monday, the Patriots, who beat the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX, became the first team to sign their first-round pick when they locked up guard Logan Mankins to a five-year contract.

Financial terms of Patterson's deal were not disclosed.

In need of depth at defensive tackle, the Eagles selected Patterson with the 31st pick out of Southern California.

The 6-foot, 292-pound Patterson, a key cog in the Trojans' back-to-back championship teams, recorded 45 tackles, including 16 for losses, and six sacks last season. He led the Pac-10 Conference in fumble recoveries with four.

Eagles starting defensive tackle Corey Simon has been designated the club's franchise player and has not yet signed. He likely could miss much of training camp.

Philadelphia rookies report to training camp Friday.
