Prosecutor seeks jail for Cincy fanPosted: Tuesday November 22, 2005 2:05AM; Updated: Tuesday November 22, 2005 2:05AM CINCINNATI (AP) -- A fan who ran out of the stands and snatched a football away from Brett Favre should go to jail to send a strong message about conduct at Paul Brown Stadium, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters says. Deters wrote a letter to Hamilton County Municipal Judge David Stockdale on Monday urging him to impose jail time for Greg Gall, 31, of Cincinnati. "I feel very strongly about this," he said. "We need to hold people personally responsible for this type of behavior. If we don't, stupid acts like this will inspire copycat actions and result in increased limitations and restrictions for everybody." Gall pleaded innocent to resisting arrest, trespassing and disorderly conduct while intoxicated at a court appearance last month. He was released on his own recognizance following the hearing. Gall faces a sentence ranging from no jail time to four months behind bars and up to 30 hours of community service. An assistant prosecutor got the impression from a meeting last week that Stockdale would not impose jail time. The prosecutor's office wants at least 30 days behind bars, Deters wrote in the letter to Stockdale. Gall interrupted the final minute of Cincinnati's 21-14 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 30. Favre drove the Packers to the Cincinnati 28-yard line before Gall ran on the field and took the ball away from the Green Bay quarterback, causing officials to blow the play dead. Deters also said Gall has a prior conviction from 1995 on a charge of aggravated assault stemming from a drunken bar fight. Scott Rubenstein, Gall's lawyer, said he hopes to work out a plea deal where his client avoids jail. Gall is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday. Rubenstein said he doesn't think jail time would have Deters' intended effect. |
