Barrera makes quick work of FanaPosted: Sunday April 10, 2005 12:30AM; Updated: Sunday April 10, 2005 12:30AM
EL PASO, Texas (Ticker) - Marco Antonio Barrera has been involved in some long, drawn-out fights in the last couple of years. On Saturday, he needed just five minutes to win. Barrera dropped South African contender Mzonke Fana with a vicious right hand 1:48 into the second round to retain his WBC super featherweight title at the Don Haskins Center. After hard-fought bouts with Manny Pacquiao, Pauly Ayala and nemesis Erik Morales that each went at least 10 rounds, Barrera (60-4, 42 KOs) thoroughly dominated Fana (22-3) from the opening bell. The 31-year-old Barrera has had a history of trouble retaining titles for an extended period of time. However, there was no problem holding on to the belt he claimed in a 12-round majority decision over Morales on November 27. With his first title defense behind him, Barrera could go for a hefty payday by taking a rematch against Pacquiao or possibly a fourth fight against Morales. There has also been talk of Barrera moving up to 135 pounds in an attempt to become the first Mexican fighter to win titles in four weight classes. © 2004 SportsTicker Enterprises, LP |
