Who's Hot, Who's Not
Pittsburgh Pooh-bahs
Bill Cowher orchestrates fifth trip to AFC title game, Penguins owner Mario Lemieux's recently purchased Omaha Lancers are in first place in the USHL, and native son August Wilson is back on Broadway with Gem of the Ocean -- set in Pittsburgh and starring Phylicia Rashad, ex-wife of NFL's Ahmad.
Edwardsheimer
Note to Jets' Herman Edwards: It's better to imitate other coaches' winning moves. In the wild-card game Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer helped keep New York alive by cautiously playing for a field goal that missed. Jets did same thing a week later and suffered same fate versus Steelers.
Tony Parker
Let's see: He signed a $66 million contract before the season. He's off to the best start (15.4 ppg, 5.9 assists, 48.8 shooting percentage) of his four-year career. His Spurs are in first place at 30-9, and he might get picked for the All-Star Game. Could life be sweeter for the 22-year-old point guard? Sure could. He's been linked to Desperate Housewives knockout Eva Longoria.
NHL
A four-month lockout? You ain't seen nothing yet. And you ain't going to be seeing anything anytime soon, either. The league's puck supplier fired half its employees, while union boss Bob Goodenow reportedly told players who aren't already in Europe to head there and get a job. Wayne Gretzky said recently, "I'm scared we could be looking at ... two years."
Being Dylan -- or Dillon
A month after Bob's Like a Rolling Stone was named best song ever by, like, Rolling Stone, his memoir is at No. 6 on the Times best-seller list. And "How does it feel ... to be on your own?" would be a timely question for Pats RB Corey Dillon, who got loose for 144 yards in win.
Booty
Matt Leinart says he's returning to USC, which means quarterback John David Booty gets another year as backup. And on a day when J. Lo was nowhere to be seen at the Golden Globes, the NFL's most famous backside had no chance to shake: Randy Moss went without a touchdown in Vikings' loss.
Samuel L. Jackson
Nobody looks better in a tux than Jackson did at the Golden Globes. And why that big smile? Maybe because his basketball flick, Coach Carter, trounced those Fockers at the weekend box office.
Traveling by Air
It's not just big airlines that are having trouble making connections (and profits). NFL's best passing offenses -- Colts' and Vikings' -- were laid low last week, as were Mike Martz's Rams. Yep, January is a lousy time to fly.
