No F1 makeup race at IndianapolisPosted: Sunday July 3, 2005 10:35AM; Updated: Sunday July 3, 2005 3:20PM
MAGNY-COURS, France (Reuters) -- U.S. Grand Prix promoter Tony George has ruled out the idea of Formula One teams holding an extra 'free' race after the season ends to compensate fans for last month's Indianapolis fiasco. "There will be no [race] at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this fall," the Indianapolis Star quoted the IMS chief executive as saying. "Our position to [Formula One Management leader] Bernie [Ecclestone], who is our link to the F1 community, is that the sooner we can get the focus back on the real issues that affect all of us, the better off we'll be," he added. The newspaper quoted IMS spokesman Ron Green as saying that the Speedway's top priority was resolving the problems resulting from this year's race. The second priority was "working on an event for 2006." Green said the Speedway had "no energy" for anything else. The June 19 race at Indianapolis was turned into a six-car fiasco when the seven Michelin teams -- Renault, McLaren, Williams, Toyota, Sauber, Red Bull and BAR -- withdrew after the formation lap because of safety fears about their tyres. That left just Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi on track as some of the fans in the 120,000 strong crowd threw bottles and cans at the track. French tire company Michelin has already offered to refund race day fans for their tickets as well as paying for the first 20,000 tickets sold for next year's race. Team bosses said at the French Grand Prix on Friday that they had suggested a non-championship race at the circuit after the season ends in October, although the three teams using Bridgestone tires were unlikely to want to attend.
