Dolphins coach Nick Saban said there was no update on the status of retired tailback Ricky Williams, who recently spoke with him about the possibility of rejoining the Dolphins. Dolphins cornerback Patrick Surtain and the Chiefs have agreed in principle to a multiyear contract extension that includes an eight-digit signing bonus provided a trade between the teams can be worked out. The Chiefs reportedly are offering a fourth-round draft choice while the Dolphins are believed to be insistent upon a selection in the first three rounds. The Chiefs have no desire to only draft a cornerback this year and hope that player develops. The Chiefs also have talked with former New England standout Ty Law, but Law will not have screws removed from his surgically repaired right ankle until May. If the Dolphins can't net a first-day draft choice in a trade, they likely will keep Surtain for this season at $8.3 million and assign him the franchise tag in the future. Saban said he wants to sign tight end Randy McMichael, entering the final year of his contract, to a long-term deal. Coach Joe Gibbs, who is also president of the team, said the Redskins continues to solicit offers for wide receiver Rod Gardner and confirmed that discussions have taken place with safety Sean Taylor, who fired his agent after signing with the club as a rookie last year and is seeking alterations to his contract. Trevor Pryce, the Broncos' four-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman, could be released soon if the team cannot find a suitable trade partner. The Broncos, who were involved in a flurry of personnel activity this week, are trying to free salary cap space and have been working for two months to move Pryce. A third option would be for the eight-year veteran to accept a substantial pay cut to remain with Denver. That option seems unlikely. The Buccaneers have reached agreement with free-agent defensive tackle Chris Hovan, a first-round pick in the 2000 draft who fell out of favor in Minnesota after three impressive seasons. Veteran free agent wide receiver Curtis Conway is expected to visit the Bucs today. Bears restricted free agent Steve Edwards signed a one-year tender offer, creating further congestion at the team's guard positions. Veteran Rex Tucker is still under contract, but the former starter at left guard is expected to be waived June 1 to help clear salary-cap space. Having yet to show any interest in re-signing 2004 starter Hannibal Navies and still in search of more speed at the linebacker position, the Packers are looking into the possibility of signing Kansas City free agent Monty Beisel. Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio hasn't yet talked with safety Donovin Darius to discuss whether Darius plans to participate in the offseason program. Del Rio previously said he wants to make sure Darius, who's unhappy with getting the franchise tag three years in a row, is committed to the team before he joins the program. Jaguars defensive tackle Marcus Stroud hasn't gotten a contract extension yet, but he's still due to get a big raise this season in the final year of the five-year contract he signed as a rookie in 2001. Reggie Fowler's attempt to buy the Vikings is going well, one of his prospective front-office members said. "Everything's going great; we've just got to get (NFL) approval," said fellow Arizonan John Mistler, who is expected to be part of Fowler's management team if the league approves the approximately $600 million sale. "I'm confident it will get done. Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor still has an interest in buying the Vikings if the Fowler deal doesn't go through. "My understanding, I think, is the same as everybody's," he said. "They have given Reggie another almost two months to get his financial thing put together, so they're giving him plenty of time. I don't think that makes any difference to any of us that are in my group. I mean, we'll just wait." MORE TRUTH & RUMORS: MLB | NBA | NHL/Soccer |
