NBA Truth & Rumors: April 4, 2005Posted: Monday April 4, 2005 10:56AM; Updated: Monday April 4, 2005 10:56AM MORE TRUTH & RUMORS: MLB
The Bulls are expected to reveal more information today about Eddy Curry's irregular heartbeat, plus a definitive treatment plan and how long the fourth-year center will be out of the lineup. Even if Curry gets the go-ahead, it likely would be several more days before he would be ready for game action. NBA officials remain quietly concerned about another summer like last year's with elite players such as Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter whining -- and dogging -- their way out of long-term guaranteed contracts. Look for Kidd to start demanding his way out of New Jersey. Will Kevin Garnett be next? How about Allen Iverson? As for Kidd, the Nets might like to accommodate him. One interesting scenario involves the Lakers and Lamar Odom. Magic President Bob Vander Weide said that the franchise could look for a limited partner or partners. The Magic say they also would be willing to listen to Michael Jordan (again) or perhaps Tiger Woods or -- once he retires as a player -- Shaquille O'Neal. Privately, the franchise is no longer optimistic about its future in Orlando. The confidence the Magic once had about keeping the team in town has faded. At the moment -- and things can change fast -- Rich DeVos' family is starting to get that same queasy feeling it did before it lost Shaq. Some scuttlebutt suggests that Steve Francis wants out of Orlando or will become trade-bait. When asked if Francis' future was addressed in a recent meeting with GM John Weisbrod. Jeff Fried, Francis' agent, said, "That was never brought up at all," Fried said. "Steve's extremely happy here." The Pistons, long aware of coach Larry Brown's eccentricities, were prepared to find a replacement for Brown if he had decided not to return after surgery. Friends say Brown's wife doesn't care for Detroit and that, despite his repeated denials, New York remains his likely landing spot. If Brown leaves, Detroit radio remains abuzz with rumors again of Tom Izzo leaving Michigan State. Pistons president Joe Dumars vehemently denied having any contact with former Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders. A report cited unnamed sources saying the Pistons had covertly reached out to Saunders to gauge his interest in coaching the Pistons if Brown decided to leave after this season. Not wanting a distraction with the playoffs looming, Mavs owner Mark Cuban said Sunday that Avery Johnson's contract won't be finalized until after the playoffs. Johnson has been working under the $1.1 million deal he signed as a player last summer. The scuttlebutt among Bucks and NBA insiders is the Bucks are now seriously looking to change coaches, head and assistant alike. While Terry Porter still has one more year remaining on his contract, it is believed he'll be relieved of his duties with a more experienced replacement likely to be brought in. New Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert continues his makeover with former player Greg Anthony the latest to interview for Jim Paxson's GM job. Cavs guard Jeff McInnis appears to have fallen out of favor with Brendon Malone the same way he fell out with Paul Silas in his last days as coach. Nene has another season under contract before becoming a restricted free agent, though the Nuggets can negotiate an extension with him this summer. The Celtics Antoine Walker has severely bruised left knee. "We'll just take it day-by-day," he said. "I don't have any mobility right now in my knee. So, until I get that back, it's going to be a while until I play again. My hope is to play against Washington [tomorrow]. But right now, it looks like Saturday [at New Jersey]." Grant Hill and Jameer Nelson, who missed Saturday night's victory in New Jersey, both are hoping to return against Dallas, but neither was offering any guarantees over the weekend. Nelson has missed the past three games with a muscle tear around the rib cage. Hill missed Saturday's game with a bruised left shin. |
