The Rangers and the New York Mets engaged in serious talks concerning second baseman Alfonso Soriano this week... The Rangers also remain interested in Orioles pitcher Sidney Ponson, who was traded to the San Diego Padres on Saturday. According to baseball sources, the Giants have been among the most dedicated teams scouting the Red Sox' minor league system in recent days, which places Jason Schmidt squarely on the radar approaching next Sunday's afternoon deadline. Publicly, at least, the Giants indicate they are not likely to deal the pitcher, who is 7-5 with a 4.74 ERA in what has heretofore been a disappointing season. Center fielder Bernie Williams plans to keep playing after this season, said his agent, Scott Boras. According to an industry source, the Texas Rangers would be interested in Ponson, for either a prospect or outfielder Richard Hidalgo, if the Padres deal falls through. But the Orioles still would have to absorb some of Ponson's contract. The Marlins have apparently narrowed their focus to the Chicago White Sox in discussions for A.J. Burnett, but there remains a chance the pitcher won't be dealt before Sunday's trade deadline. The White Sox were still on hold Sunday -- and could be for a while -- waiting for the Florida Marlins to accept their proposal of a trade for pitcher A.J. Burnett that would allow them to explore the possibility of signing him to a long-term contract... Sources indicated Williams also was working on deals to bring in more bullpen help, especially if Marte is traded, and another middle infielder. A published report Sunday said general manager Kenny Williams is in serious discussions with the Florida Marlins on a deal that would bring starting pitcher A.J. Burnett to the Sox in exchange for reliever Damaso Marte and starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy, who is with Class AAA Charlotte. |
