Could Moises Alou be headed to Houston?

Many within the Astros organization would like to acquire Giants slugger Moises Alou for the pennant stretch. Although he declared it a dead issue, manager Phil Garner hasn't stopped thinking about adding Alou's bat to the lineup.

The Yankees may play host to the All-Star Game in 2008 during the final season at Yankee Stadium and also get the All-Star Game in 2010 at the new Yankee Stadium. An official who had been briefed on the discussions requested anonymity because Major League Baseball has not made its final decision on the location of the games.

Al Leiter might have been on the brink of losing his spot in the Yankees rotation last night, but it appears he will keep it for now. Leiter again had trouble with walks -- five in 5 1/3 innings -- but he left with a 5-2 lead. Since a strong outing in his first game after the Yankees acquired him, July 17 at Boston, Leiter has walked 24 and allowed 34 hits in 29 innings.

The Yankees are moving closer to signing Ruben Rivera to a minor league deal, with an eye on seeing if he can help them upgrade center field defensively when the rosters expand next month.

Despite all the talk about the White Sox trying to get a deal done with Cincinnati for outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., it could just be the ultimate smoke screen for something else in the works. Seattle closer Eddie Guardado reportedly has cleared waivers, and according to a source in the Mariners organization, is being mentioned in a potential trade with the White Sox.

Mets catcher Mike Piazza is out for at least a couple of days, and there's a chance he could have to go on the disabled list. Piazza broke a bone in his left hand during Tuesday night's victory over the Pirates. "It's in a lot of pain," Piazza said. "Even when I tried to hit, it was really sore. I'm very frustrated at this point."

Mike Cameron was released from the Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, Calif., and flew to New York on team owner Fred Wilpon's private jet. Cameron had surgery Friday to repair multiple fractures of both cheekbones. "That's good news," manager Willie Randolph said. "I spoke to him today and it sounded like he had marbles in his mouth." Cameron's status for the season remains in doubt.

Nomar Garciaparra left Wednesday night's victory over Houston in the fifth inning with stiffness in his lower back. Garciaparra departed shortly after having to lunge for line drives by Orlando Palmeiro and Morgan Ensberg.
