The Heat will make a full-court press to sign free agent swingman Michael Finley during an expected visit to South Florida early this week. Eager to impress him, the Heat has placed 20 posters of Finley wearing a Heat uniform on light poles on streets next to AmericanAirlines Arena. Michael Finley's decision should come today, and insiders expect it will be Miami, not Detroit. Dale Davis' agent Chubby Wells said Davis will wait for [Michael] Finley's move before deciding between Detroit and Cleveland. Guard Derek Anderson is expected to sign with the Rockets on Tuesday. The Rockets were able to offer him their smaller salary-cap exception, worth $1.67 million the first season, considerably less than many teams had offered. Anderson had narrowed his choice to the Rockets and Lakers. Aaron McKie gave the Nets the thumbs-down yesterday, refusing their one-year offer to accept a two-year, $5 million deal with the Lakers. The 6-5 swingman, a recent amnesty cut by Philadelphia, was the Nets' primary target to fill their backup wing slot, but their offer of the veteran's minimum (one year, $1.1 million) was blown out of the water by Phil Jackson, who has an extraordinary track record for extending the careers of big guards well past their prime. With a $2.5-million slot left, the Lakers would like to add a small, quick guard or a big man. Their top guard prospect, former Laker Tyrone Lue, is expected to re-sign in Atlanta. Still on the Lakers' list and available are former UCLA Bruin Earl Watson and former Laker Jannero Pargo. With a short list of big men to choose from, a return by Vlade Divac may be possible. The Knicks are still looking to sign Pacers young swingman James Jones, whom Isiah Thomas drafted in Indiana. The Nets have agreed to terms with center Tractor Traylor, and the deal will become official if he passes his physical. The Magic still are considering a variety of frontcourt free agents, including power forwards Christian Laettner (Miami Heat) and Malik Allen (Charlotte Bobcats). General manager Billy Knight emerged as the biggest winner in the Hawks' dispute with Steve Belkin over acquiring Joe Johnson. Belkin, the one owner who doubted Knight, is being bought out. |
